HistoryEdit

"Just what is that red aircraft? There's nothing on it on our databases. And there's no way the Rebel Forces could've developed it on their own. Who the hell's behind it!?"
Ulrich Olsen[src]

The "Z.O.E." was created by North Osea G.I. sometime between 1996 and 1998. The aircraft was born as a result of the company's research and use of combat data extracted from the flight recorder of the ADFX-02 Morgan, a prototype aircraft developed by Gründer as the "South Belka Munitions Factory" in the early 1980s.

The only known first-gen unit in existence was involved in the Usean Rebellion of 1998, which was seized by the anti-Osean opposition forces. The aircraft, equipped with the "Zone of Endless" AI combat system, was deployed by the rebels as the "guardian" of Fortress Intolerance, their last remaining stronghold. Christened the "Z.O.E. Commander", the FALKEN engaged in a final duel with the Allied ace Scarface One, who used his skill to overcome its technological superiority and destroy it.

In-game appearancesEdit

Ace Combat 2Edit

FALKEN ZOE

The second game of the series, Ace Combat 2, was the game in which the ADF-01 was introduced. The franchise's first original aircraft design, it is first introduced as an enemy aircraft in mission #21, "Fighter's Honor", which is unlocked by defeating all four Z.O.E. enemies in the earlier stages of the game and destroying the Extra Powerful Cruise Missile in "Last Resort".

As an enemy aircraft, it is the fifth "Z.O.E." aircraft, and assumes the rank of "Commander". The most skilled of all aircraft in the squadron, it will often make use of cobra maneuvers to shake off the player, and use a rear-mounted machine gun and launch missiles backwards in the case it is pursued from behind. Its armor is somewhat more durable than that of normal fighters, as it can withstand three missile impacts before succumbing.

Despite its combat tactics, it is not a very difficult enemy to engage in a direct dogfight, and can be easily defeated with a constant offensive. As noted in the pre-mission briefing, it has the highest destruction reward of any aircraft in the game, at 45,000 points.

The first-generation ADF-01 model makes its first canonical appearance in the main campaign. In the mission "Fighter's Honor", a lone FALKEN controlled by a Z.O.E. unit makes a last stand as the guardian of Fortress Intolerance, and serves the role of the game's "final boss". This version of the aircraft differs from the second-gen airframe because of its increased length and sleeker design.

At the start of the fight, the ADF-01 will attack with standard missiles and gunfire, while using an integral ECM system to generate "ghost" targets to distract the player if engaged with aircraft combat maneuvers. After suffering enough damage, the FALKEN begins using its back-mounted machine gun and enhances its ECM. In the third and final stage, the Z.O.E. loses its ECM system to battle damage and enhances its reactions, and begins to fight like a normal aircraft until shot down.

The original FALKEN also makes small appearances outside the campaign.

  • In "EX Mission 02", a lone ADF-01 is featured as a target, and must be shot down as it makes its getaway from the player.
  • In "EX Mission 04": the player must engage the standard ADF-01 Z.O.E. in combat, defeat it and descend into Fortress Intolerance. After the ICBM is destroyed, an enemy squadron of four FALKENs armed with jamming systems and Tactical Laser Systems begin attacking, and must be killed to finish the mission.

TriviaEdit

  • In the beta stages of Ace Combat Xi: Skies of Incursion, one of the planned unlockable aircraft was the "ZOE-FALKEN-A1", supposdely a mass-production version of the original Z.O.E unit.[1]
