The EA-18G, a derivative of the Super Hornet project, is ultimately destined to become the replacement for the venerable EA-6B Prowler with the aircraft’s impending retirement in 2010. The Growler will have the ability to perform full-spectrum electronic surveillance and electronic attack of threat radars and communications systems. The EA-18G is based on Block 2 Super Hornet specifications and comes pre-installed with an AESA radar and advanced rear crew station. Physically it stands identical to the F/A-18F with only two notable exceptions: the lack of an internal cannon to accommodate the LR-700 receiver, and receiver antennas mounted on the wingtip missile stations. It’s flexible design, being 99% common with the F/A-18F dual-seater Super Hornet, will allow it to perform a wide-array of tactical missions in both the carrier environment and land-based fields. It’s greatest advantage, aside from its nearly identical performance specifications to the F/A-18F Super Hornet, is its ability to wield dual AIM-120C AMRAAM’s while in ECM configuration, which provides self-escort capability, a feature lacking on the current EA-6B. The EA-18G is due to reach operational status sometime before 2010.
