[edit] Overview
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a single-seat, twin-engine, agile combat aircraft which will be used in the air-to-air, air-to-ground and tactical reconnaissance roles. The design of the Typhoon is optimised for air dominance performance with high instantaneous and sustained turn rates, and specific excess power. Special emphasis has been placed on low wing loading, high thrust-to-weight ratio, excellent all-round visibility and easy handling. The use of stealth technology is incorporated throughout the aircrafts basic design.
The Eurofighter’s high performance is matched with excellent all-round vision, sophisticated attack, identification and defence systems which include the ECR 90 long-range radar and Infrared Search and Track (IRST) system, advanced medium and short-range air-to-air missiles and a comprehensive electronic warfare suite to enhance weapon system effectiveness and survivability. Eurofighter Typhoon is intentionally aerodynamically unstable to provide extremely high angles of attack, reduced drag and enhanced lift. The unstable design cannot be flown by conventional means and the pilot controls the aircraft via a computerised ‘fly-by-wire’ system.
The Royal Air Force intends to procure 232 aircraft to replace the Tornado F.3 and the Jaguar. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in June 2002 and run until the year 2014. The current estimated total procurement cost of the program to the UK is £15.9Bn.
[edit] EF-2000E Typhoon II
The EF-2000E Typhoon II is an upgraded, COFFIN-equipped variant of the EF-2000 multi-role fighter. Operated exclusively by the UPEO in large numbers due to its low cost of manufacture and maintenance, it is a common sight at many UPEO bases. The EF-2000E was used in the early stages of the corporate war, mainly in fast skirmishes with Neucom forces.
