[edit] Description

The F-1 support fighter, which sports an uncanny resemblance to the SEPECAT Jaguar, has served the Japan Air Self Defense Force since 1977, first serving as the T-2 supersonic trainer, and is now being phased out by the far more capable F-2 Support Fighter. Developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, The F-1 was a domestically produced aircraft developed to serve primarily in the ground attack role, but could be fitted with AIM-9 missiles for interception duty. With a modest speed of 1700kmh and a combat range of 1130km, the F-1 has always been derived as a bit of an underperformer in the military aviation industry, however it does distingush itself as a reliable, attractive attacker aircraft. As the United States began exporting the F-4 and F-15 to foreign nations, Japan would take hold of those fighters and relegate the F-1 as a light border and maritime patrol aircraft. Service-life extentions kept the F-1 fleet flying far longer than its inital concept, but, like the F-4, the F-1 is rapidly being phased out of service.
