[edit] Overview
The F-4X Phantom II is an advanced F-4E derivative proposed under the joint Israeli-American project Peace Jack. It called for the development of an advanced F-4 housing the HIAC-1 reconnaissance camera for operations over Israel's neighboring Arab countries. The aircraft, fitted with dual 2500-gallon conformal water tanks for increased engine efficiency, would be able to break Mach 3 and be capable of cruising speeds around Mach 2.7, allowing Israel unhindered intelligence-gathering capabilities and would bring up a contender for the formidable SR-71 Blackbird. It was also because of these capabilities that there was talk of converting the aircraft into a new class of interceptor. As the situation would have it, the in-production development of the American F-15 Eagle and a perceived threat to the recce dominance of the SR-71 would subsequently end the development of the F-4X, and project Peace Jack, by 1974.
