[edit] Description

The Mirage 2000D is a specialized strike version of the Mirage 2000C interceptor/air superiority fighter used by the French Air Force. The -D version was intended to be a conventional attack version of the Mirage 2000N nuclear bomber which was designed to carry the ASMP standoff nuclear missile. It was conceived when development of the advanced Rafale fighter was delayed. The Mirage 2000D's airframe is very similar to other Mirage 2000's except for the addition of a second seat (the -N is also a two-seater and both are based on the Mirage 2000B trainer). Although the Mirage 2000D can carry a much larger payload than the Mirage 2000C, it still retains the blistering speed and agility of the -C version. The Mirage 2000D also has a very advanced Antilope terrain-following radar which allows the aircraft to fly automatically as fast as 682 mph at only 300 feet. The Mirage 2000D can also carry laser guided weaponry in conjunction with a Thomson-CSF ATLIS pod. The strike versions of the Mirage 2000 completed a formidable multi-role family of aircraft that spearheaded the French Air Force in the 1990's.
