The September 11 attacks (also known as 9/11, pronounced nine-eleven) were four coordinated attacks carried out by the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda against the United States of America on September 11, 2001. The attacks involved four airlines hijacked by Al-Qaeda members, which were used to crash into major U.S. buildings. Nearly three thousand civilians died, and thousands more were injured.
The attacks directly resulted in a heightened state of alert in the United States and across the entire world, as well as beginning a concentrated effort to prevent terrorist acts. 9/11 was the first in a series of events that would eventually lead to the development of the ASF-X Shinden II.
Effect on Japan
24 Japanese nationals were killed during 9/11. Then-Prime Minister Junichirō Koizumi expressed "great anger" in reaction. Like many countries in the world, Japan remained on high alert following the attacks and put increased security at all U.S. military installations in the country.
Taiga/Fore Jet merge
Fore Jet, an American aircraft manufacturer, was one of many aircraft manufacturers whose consideration of security in their aircraft designs was questioned following the attacks. In light of this, Fore Jet assimilated into Taiga Heavy Industries, a Japanese aircraft manufacturer that was holding a positive decades-long reputation.

Development of the GoldStar and Shinden
Fore Jet was known for its unconventional aircraft designs, which Taiga decided to refer to when it developed the TFJ-01 GoldStar, an airliner featuring canards and forward-swept wings. Following 100 orders for the airliner, and the desire for a new aircraft to defend Japan, Taiga began development of the ASF-X Shinden II.
- The September 11 attacks occurred two days before the official release of Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies in Japan. The development team, shocked by the events, realized that one of the images they were going to release for the newspaper article Usea Today Special: The Days Of Shattered Skies, of the Erusian battleship Tanager sinking in Comberth Harbor, looked extremely similar to New York City as the Twin Towers were burning due to the Comberth Harbor skyline. The buildings were removed from the image, which explains why it looks like a battleship is sinking in a port with no buildings.
