The ADV was designed to replace the RAF's aging fleet of Lightning F.6 and Phantom FGR.2 fighters. It was based on the Tornado GR.1 attack plane. The ADV had design differences from the original IDS, including a stretched fuselage to allow for 4 Skyflash missiles to be carried. The first ADV prototype flew on 27 October 1979.
The first version of the ADV was the Tornado F.2. Eighteen F.2s were built. It used the same engines as the GR.1 and could carry 2 Sidewinders under its wings. The F.2 was never put to large scale use by the RAF due to problems with the Foxhunter radar.
The second, more successful variant was the Tornado F.3. It had newer engines, could carry four Sidewinders to the F.2's two, and had automatic wing sweep control. The F.3 entered service in July 1986.
