The United States' contiguous states are situated between the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans to the west and east, respectively. Alaska, a state of the United States, is a peninsula at the far northwestern end of North America, while the state of Hawaii is an archipelago at the northern Pacific Ocean. The United States also has territories on several islands on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean.
The northeast consists of temperate forests, while the southeastern regions are hot and humid, and Miami and nearby places along the Gulf of Mexico's eastern coast experience a near-tropical climate. The Midwestern states are mostly grasslands, while its southern parts are generally more drier except for the humid Texan coast near the Gulf of Mexico and hillside areas. Nevada and other western regions are dominated by the Rocky Mountains and their nearby deserts, except for the Pacific coast, which consists of California's warm Mediterranean climate and Oregon and Washington's wet rain-forests. Alaska consists of colder forests in the interior, temperate Pacific woodlands to the southeast, and icy tundra to the north. Hawaii, and the territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Marianas, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands all have a tropical climate.
